Stuff I recommend other than galettes at Kitchenette, Jakarta

By now I’m sure you’re no stranger to Kitchenette, one of the few hot spots in town that are still hot. Part of the reason is because it’s owned by local F&B giant Ismaya Group. They’ve been tested through time and budding groups of competitors in recent years, but the group only continues to grow because they’ve done a great job at keeping up with quality standards.

I’ve frequented this eatery the most out of all Ismaya’s eateries for many reasons: It’s conveniently located in central Jakarta (they have branches up north and south too, plus another in Bali), it’s still open past midnight, it’s a comfortable setting and the staff’s usually well-educated, it’s great food considering it’s priced at a reasonable range, and many, many more. These are the same reasons I believe most everyone in Jakarta can enjoy Kitchenette – It’s a less exclusive brand compared to their other eateries (think Skye and SoHo).

Kitchenette’s best known for their galettes and crepes. If you’ve been reading the blog for a while you’ll know I don’t like pancakes and crepes and things of that nature. One time I fell sick and barfed after eating martabak manis, and have eaten only egg-based pancakes ever since. Thankfully galettes are made out of buckwheat flour, so I guess I can tolerate it better. I’ve tried a few galettes before one time (see photos at end of this post), just out of curiosity, and have ordered other items from Kitchenette since then. Doesn’t mean they’re not good because they are good, but they’ve got plenty more delicious items on their menu other than galettes.

Now there are 2 items that I almost always order. First off it’s this enchilada.

Enchilladas with melted cheddar, jalapenos, and homemade sour cream

It’s marked as a special main dish under ‘Grandma Stella’s Kitchen’ on the menu, and yes if you haven’t heard I’m a sucker for all things cheese and dairy, so you have the green light to say I’m totally biased with this recommendation, but there’s so much cheese and sour cream and parsley and peppers here. This is actually one time I enjoy beef because they lose all the umaminess during the baking process. All you taste is cheese, cheese, tomato puree, cheese, sour cream, cheese, meaty textures without the beef smell, and some more cheese. So soft, so comforting and so fat. I recommend it for your regular work lunch and I bet your productivity will slump by 120%. Get an Americano when you get this.

Fish N’ Chips

I dare to say … best fish & chips in town, even better than Fish & Co. imo. Again, this may just be personal preference, as I have a friend who recently tried it after I raved about it and he didn’t like that the fish was too soft and the crust was super dry, i.e. not to be eaten when you’re coughing. To be fair, he liked the salad, and that’s a first for him to like salads lol. The serving is about 2 fists and a half, so if you end up liking it you’ll enjoy every last bite. But if you don’t … well. My friend didn’t finish it.

What he said was true and that’s what I love most about this dish. The fish was super soft and well-marinated, but that doesn’t mean it crumbles as you bite, nor does it disintegrates easily from the fish (as with most fish & chips around town …). To top it all off, there’s about an ounce of mayo-pumped coleslaw (the salad) plus a separate serving of sour cream, and you know I like fluffy creamy stuff, so this was goood. The grainy texture of the crust against the silky dory inside is just so good. I don’t usually eat fries too, but they fried everything well on this dish, not to mention you get everything from salty to sour to a little sweet and a hint of umami.
