How I started using Bio-Oil

I was invited to join the Bio-Oil talkshow on the last day of Beauty Blogger Meetup last week. The theme was Happy Skin, Beautiful Inside Out, and I discovered the versatility of the product aside from treating your peskiest scars and pregnancy stretch marks … plus many more.

But a brief warning before you read on: You will encounter mild gore content. I know I’ll close my eyes when I see open blood in the movies. But this comes in pictures … so be sure you’re going to be okay reading this.

I’ve seen ads of it on magazines and the orange 60ml bottles on the isles of Walgreens while I was living in SF. I never took a second glance because it’s never occurred to me that by scars, they also mean old acne scars, scars from wounds and other scars in general. Just the words “scars” and “stretch marks” plastered across their brand instantly made me think of middle-aged mothers concerned with their cellulites.

It’s only now that I take another look at the package.

As part of Beauty Showcase 2015, the talkshow was held at Senayan City’s central area on the Ground floor. I didn’t attend a single event except this one, lol. You can count how many skincare vendors participated with your fingers! The rest are makeup and hair stuff.

That’s Carnellin on her hosting duties! From While You On Earth~

The aim of the talk was to get modern multitasking women to pay more attention to our health from the inside out. Only after we take a closer look within can we make the necessary lifestyle changes to achieve that proverbial balance of our mind and body. Body-wise, most of us aren’t born with flawless skin, so we might already know all too well that the state of our skin can really affect our emotional state (and vice versa).

Corporate spokesperson Tiara Dwijayanti Lestari stated that the multi-award-winning oil is now here in Indonesia so that it addresses skin issues all women face and how it’s important to heal from the inside out. Having a healthy and happy skin leads to a happier life, as “it boosts a woman’s confidence as she carries out her day-to-day activities,” she said. Couldn’t agree more. Flawless skin is like the holy grail of beauty, don’t you think?

They say happiness is the ultimate secret to both inner and outer beauty, so “it’s important to get a proper balance of nutrients inside and out,” said Nurhayatini, product manager of PT. Radiant Sentral Nutrindo. To that, Bio-Oil serves as a way for women to get their nutrient intake from the outside. Of course your whole healthy-and-happy-skin regimen won’t be complete with Bio-Oil alone. Internally, we need to make healthy lifestyle adjustments to glow from within. These adjustments include your usual suspects: Adopting an exercise routine, consuming good-for-you foods, keeping a positive outlook and, most important of all, being happy and having confidence.

So what’s behind the African brand that made it a worldwide success story, and what about it that’s so nourishing for your skin? Well, Bio-Oil is often dubbed as a “dry oil”, so it doesn’t feel greasy on the skin and absorbs pretty quickly. This is largely because of the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™ – whatever’s formulated in the trademark makes it hydrating yet non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, and hypoallergenic, and therefore suitable for all skin types.

I’m going to investigate further on this PurCellin Oil, but in the meantime, what makes Bio-Oil an all-around skincare signature is the aforementioned botanicals (Calendula, lavender, rosemary, chamomile), as well as vitamins A (in the form of retinyl palmitate) and E (tocopheryl acetate). All these are great ingredients to look for in skincare products, which is why Bio-Oil claims to soften, brighten, and freshen things up.

Me time: For women in this day and age, proper self-care and the time to spend on things that make us happy are basically nonexistent.

Although Bio-Oil was designed to target stretch marks and scars, the beneficial skincare ingredients make it a great treatment for other skin issues, such as treating winter skin (dehydration), avoiding premature aging, evening out skin tone and improving overall complexion of the face and body. With such wide-ranging benefits, Nurhayatini saw Bio-Oil as a great way for on-the-go ladies who don’t allow themselves the time to actually have a beauty regimen at all. So book yourself that massage already, lady, and slather some oil on yourself.

On another note, here’s a not-so-fun fact: Asian skins are the most susceptible skin to scars, stretch marks, premature wrinkles and all that jazz. Why? Because our genes has determined that our skin is the thinnest and least resilient one of ’em all (compared to Caucasians, Hispanics, African-Americans, etc). Here’s how to start your anti-aging routine ASAP.

Two bloggers got to testify the efficacy of Bio-Oil on stage. Roswitha Jassin from The Pinky Lady first got to know Bio-Oil when it first arrived in Indonesia late last year. She gave it a try, and within 3 months, the scars she got post-childbirth have all appear disguised. By now, Bio-Oil has became central to her beauty ritual. She’s using it for everything from treating problem areas to applying it as an everyday moisturizer.

Another blogger who’s been using Bio-Oil since it arrived was Reihan Putri from Discover Beauty with Putri. The makeup artist expressed her love for Bio-Oil’s natural ingredients, saying that the fragrance was almost therapeutic for her, and that despite it being an oil, it’s far from greasy and fast-absorbing. For her, Bio-Oil has faded her old acne scars and made her skin much smoother than before. But she stressed the fact that you have to use it consistently in order to get the results. Read her full review here.

I thought it was a great show because you finally hear a skincare brand that tells you like it is – there’s a bigger component to your regimen outside of applying layers and layers of products. For so long, women have been lied all too many times from corporate marketing, lies that tell them they need those products in order to achieve perfect skin. They didn’t care about anything beyond the transaction. It’s almost as if saying, without buying this product right now, you will never have anything even close to perfect skin.

In reality, it’s your lifestyle habits that are constantly forming and tweaking the make-up of your skin on a cellular level, and I thought it’s great for them to encourage education. By the end of the show, we all took pictures together and received a goodie bag each.

  • 3 pamphlets, “Bio-Oil Guide to Old Scars”
  • a press release and factsheet

Now let’s do the routine – assessing the ingredients list.

IMG_8823 1

INGREDIENTS: Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Triisononanoin, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Isopropyl Myristate, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, BHT, Bisabolol, Fragrance, Amyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Salicylate, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Limonene, Linalool, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, CI 26100

As you can see, none of these ingredients are listed as the first 5 in the list, although Bio-Oil does contain BHT and artificial ‘Fragrance’. Nevertheless, it has just received Stillwater’s stamp of approval.

I’m looking to see how effective it is to treat scars from my recent wound.

IMG_8934

This one I got 9 days before this picture. I fell down on my right knee, right on the staircase in the movie theatre after watching Jupiter Ascending. The first thing I noticed wasn’t the bleeding pain, but 2 mean girls around my age openly laughing at me.

I haven’t applied any medication yet since the wound, and it felt as if it’ll take forever for it to clot.

IMG_8988

So I massaged the whole area lightly with Bio-Oil on Monday night (16 February 2015), and it literally absorbs within seconds. The picture I took above was around 40 seconds since my palm was last in contact with my knee.

Hoping to see it heal soon. It’s been over a week, and I really want to jump on my bed without pain and bleeding.

While I’m on it, I also applied Bio-Oil on the scars and blisters I’ve had since … well, since forever. From high-heel wearing and a lot of long-distance running.

Promise I’ll update on how my knee is healing with Bio-Oil. But in the meantime, this orange oil is available for IDR 120,000 at your nearest Guardian store.
